Two Types of Bacteria Everyone Should Know
It’s no secret that we constantly have bacteria in our mouth. Although not all bacteria is bad, some oral bacteria will cause gum disease or tooth decay. Probiotics, on the other hand, are beneficial bacteria that help in the digestion of food and play a role in protecting our teeth and gums.
Streptococcus mutans: This is a bacteria that lives in our mouths and feeds solely off the starches and sugars we eat. The bacteria then produces eroding acids which lead to tooth decay.
Porphyromonas gingivalis: This one is not found in a healthy mouth. This bacteria is linked to periodontitis, which is a serious disease that affects the bone that supports the teeth.
You can manage the bad bacteria in your mouth by practicing great oral care:
-Brushing after meals to remove unnecessary food particles
-Minimizing starch and sugary foods
-Keeping mouthwash handy to wash away bacteria
-Eating foods (especially greens) that promote healthy bacteria
